John asks…
What are common causes of knee pain in obese people?
I ask this because I am obese myself and have frequent pain in my right knee. Someone told me that it could be gout, but I thought that usually occured in the joints of toes and fingers. I am 21, 6′1″, and 330 pounds.

admin answers:
The likely cause of the pain is the stress of your weight on the joint, ligaments, and muscles around your knee joint. They are becoming inflamed and damaged from the weight of your upper body as you walk and the constant grinding of bone against the socket. If you are older you may have a lack of synovial fluid to keep the joint lubricated. Arthritis can also set in to weakened and damaged joints due to constant inflammation. Ibuprofen is a very good pain reliever for bone pain.

Chris asks…
Gout- in big toe and hands @ 26?
I had an x ray after months of a pinful big toe joint- and it showed early signs of osteoarthritis. I am a 26 year old female and really worried. Over the last couple of years, I have had painful wrists from time to time and ignored it. Recently, my fingers have been swollen and painful (especially base of my thumb.) I am waiting to see the GP for a referral. I am wondering if this could be gout? My toe is not VERY painful, but I do not feel confident to do any exercise with it. The duvet at night can pull on it and hurt a bit. I understood gout to be extremely painful (my toe was VERY p[ainful a few months ago) and for it only to affect one joint at a time. Also, I have read that gout does not show as osteoarthritis on an x ray.
Has anyone got an opinion on this please, as some aspects of what I have read a about gout sound familiar.

admin answers:
Actually at your age and presentation it’s most likely not gout or osteoarthitis but more likely rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.
Sincerely,
Doc

Carol asks…
my toe and finger joints hurt and I have toe nail fungus?
I am wondering if I have gout? or just toenail fungus? Is it possible for the fungus to make my joints hurt? Plus my joints in my fingers hurt. Seems to flair up more when I eat dairy or wheat. Last night I had pizza and my hands are puffy and my joints hurt.

admin answers:
Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid. Cut back on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables.

you can buy an anti-fungal spray, which is actually basically the same as what they sell for jock itch.

if you think you have some kind of food sensitivity, then why don’t you try cutting those foods ot of your diet completely for a week, then try the food again to see if it flares. Then you’ll have your answer and know for sure to stay away from them. Almond breeze is a great milk substitute.
