Helen asks…
What causes gout? I suffer from this quite severely and it comes on without warning.?
I would love to know if anyone has a remedy without prescribed medicines.
Thanks for any advise in advance.

Never had it myself , but know those who did. I understand it comes from uric acid forming crystals in the flesh and causes hellacious pain. I am told cherries, cherry juice, cranberries and cranberry juice is a good remedy for the gout. My buddy found out he got it from drinking beer, and a fair amount of it. His darling bride said” maybe you should stop drinking”, his immediate and firm reply was ” it don’t hurt THAT bad”. He is funny. And sore.

Sandra asks…
What causes gout and is it serious ?
Is gout brought on by poor diet and alcohol,or is it in your genetic makeup ? My father had it,and now i fear i may have it too.Im not overweight,im a moderate drinker, and i would say my diet is fairly healthy,i exercise daily and im quite an active person,so what do you think ?

admin answers:
A “poor diet” in gout terms means any food or drink that
1) dehydrates the body,
2) adds purines to the body (which turn into uric acid),
3) restricts the body from getting rid of uric acid
So to say alcohol causes gout, well alcohol isn’t going to add uric acid to your system, but it will dehydrate the body and restrict the body from getting rid of uric acid.
Yes, I don’t doubt that your genetic makeup could affect your body’s ability to over produce or under expel uric acid.
Here’s my standard answer for gout questions on here, I’ve refined it to cover many topics over the past few months…
Fellow gout sufferer here. I’ve discovered that there’s a ton of people out there that get gout and just are not sure what to do. What can I eat, what meds are there, how do I avoid this, what causes gout, etc. So here’s my information that I’ve learned in 10 years of fighting gout, and I seem to be getting it under control.
Best website I’ve found so far: www.best-gout-remedies.com.
For gout attacks, indomethacine and/ or colchicine. You’ll need scripts from your dr. For these.
For the rest of your life, do these things: drink lots of water, 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight, each day. Once or twice a day, sip on 8 oz of water mixed with 1/2 tsp of baking soda. Helps the body be more alkaline (opposite of acidic) and get rid of uric acid.
Take allopurinol every day. Very inexpensive and no side effects, you’ll need a script for this. Helps the body get rid of uric acid.
Take celery seed pills. These may help the liver not to create so much uric acid. For diet, stay away from things that dehydrate the body, like beer and coffee. Don’t eat organ meats, high fructose corn syrup. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, cottage cheese, sour cream, plain yogurt in smoothies mixed with orange juice and fruit. Drink fruit juices that are 100% juice, V8 Fusion is my favorite, it comes in many flavors.
Educate yourself on foods that are high in purines, avoid these foods as the body turns purines into uric acid.
Good luck to you!

John asks…
What causes Gout and how can I alleviate it and prevent the attacks from occurring?
How can I alleviate Gout

admin answers:
Essentially gout is caused by one of two things:
1) Too much uric acid is produced
2) Not enough uric acid is excreted
Prevention is aimed at the these two:
1) Either drugs to limit uric acid production; or take in less purine in the diet (which is a precursor) for the uric acid
2) Drugs to increase excretion of uric acid
Depending on the severity of the cause of (1) and/or (2) natural remedies and dietary change may be sufficient; if its more severe, then medications are needed.
